Polyus’ approach towards charitable giving - through the lens of the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Polyus has traditionally been very active in supporting local communities in the areas in which it operates. Our company maintains an absolute focus on being a responsible neighbour and corporate citizen.

Polyus carries its charitable activities and sponsorships out in line with our corporate Policy on Charitable Activities, Donations and Sponsorship, as well as with other corporate policies. These documents clearly define the internal rules and procedures of how our charitable activity is organised.

Polyus’ charitable activities are carried out in line with several UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Our corporate policy sets out the following six main areas of charitable activities and sponsorship:

1. Development of the regions of operation

Polyus is committed to contributing towards socio-economic development in the regions in which it operates. As well as guaranteeing employment, we implement numerous sponsorship and charity projects in our home regions. In these areas, we maintain close partnerships and regular dialogue with our stakeholders, primarily including the local population.

  • In 2019, to mark the 90thanniversary of Magadan, Polyus sponsored a number of social and local development projects. These included:
    • Developing design specifications and estimates for the construction and refurbishment of a number of vital social facilities in the region, including: 6 educational institutions; building a new maternity ward; renovating the Oncology centre; building two sports centres (financial support by Polyus: RUB 25 million).
    • Developing guidelines for the implementation of the regional “Men’s Health and Social Longevity” programme (financial support by Polyus: RUB 2.5 million).
  • Polyus Verninskoye invested RUB 23 million in social projects in the Bodaibo District in 2018, and allocated approximately RUB 24.8 million for the region in 2019. Amongst other initiatives, regional redevelopment has included supporting the renovation of the Trud stadium, the refurbishment of the Vitim cultural and recreation centre and support for the local hospital, kindergartens, education system and children’s sports. Polyus sponsored a project to build a fitness centre in Bodaibo, constructing a complex over two years.
  • Kuranakh implements a number of social projects in the areas of education, medicine, physical culture, and sports. In order to promote a healthy social climate in the Aldan District of the Republic of Sakha where it is located, the Company has built leisure facilities in local settlements and is providing support with the development of the necessary associated infrastructure.
    • For a number of years, Polyus has been financing the Metallurg sports complex in the town of Nizhny Kuranakh, designating over $380 thousands annually for the centre. The material and technical base of the complex is regularly updated and the Company provides the complex’s users with modern training facilities and sporting equipment.

2. Sports and healthy lifestyle

Polyus promotes a healthy lifestyle in the regions in which it operates.

  • In 2018, Polyus sponsored the Spring Cup, an All-Russian rhythmic gymnastics competition. Held in Krasnoyarsk, the competition involved 532 athletes from 18 Russian regions.
  • Polyus also contributes towards the development of sports facilities in its regions, as described above.
  • Polyus has a longstanding partnership with the “Zhara” half-marathon in Krasnoyarsk, one of the most popular half-marathons in Russia. In 2019, 2,300 participants joined the race.
  • In 2019, Polyus held its seventh corporate Olympics event in Yakutia, with 11 teams from across the Company competing. In preparation for the event, which coincided with the 95th anniversary of Yakutia’s gold mining industry, Polyus undertook preparations. A 100-bed dormitory was built for the event, and the district’s Metallurg sports facility and local school and gymnasium arenas were renovated and refurbished, improving the area’s sports facilities.

3. Aiding disadvantaged groups

Polyus supports disadvantaged groups, providing those in need with a quality education and, by doing so, reducing inequality in our regions of operation. Our corporate volunteer programme coordinates with our charity partners and organises donation collections of toys and stationary, as well as pro-bono volunteering and humanitarian aid.

  • In support of the Big Change educational fund, Polyus Moscow office held a humanitarian aid collection for orphaned children. The fund helps orphans find their place in life and obtain a proper education.
  • In support of the Life Line Foundation, Polyus volunteers took part in a sponsored Charity Run, with all funds raised from the event donated to a charity for seriously ill children.
  • Polyus volunteers have donated blood to the Podari Zhizn foundation, a charity that provides aid to children and young people suffering from cancer, blood disorders, and other serious diseases.
  • Our volunteers offered pro bono support to the Konstantin Khabensky Charity Foundation, a fund that specializes in providing medical support to children with serious diseases.
  • Volunteers also donate their time, and participate in volunteer-led master classes at the Maria’s Children art centre for orphans and disadvantaged children.

4. Environmental stewardship

With our charity policy, we aim to direct some of our sponsorship and charity activities towards causes supporting the environment

  • Polyus sponsored an environmental campaign in Yasnaya Polyana, the Museum estate of writer Leo Tolstoy. This saw volunteers and their families take part in replanting over 200 trees in the protected forest on the estate, which had been destroyed by a disease in the past.
  • Polyus volunteers have also carried out improvement works at several natural locations in and near Moscow, including Losiny Ostrov National Park, N.V. Tsitsin Botanical Garden, and Archangelskoye Museum Estate

5. Education and science

We run a number of collaborations with universities and colleges.

  • In the Krasnoyarsk region, Polyus sponsors educational and awareness-raising events in the field of precious metals geology for schoolchildren.
  • Polyus sponsors the education of young geologists at the GEOS Geology Museum of Central Siberia in Krasnoyarsk.
  • In Irkutsk, Polyus contributed towards the refurbishment of the lecture hall at the Irkutsk National Research Technical University, investing over RUB 2.5 million to implement the project.
  • Every year, Polyus accepts engineering and geology students as trainees.

6. Culture and art

As part of our goal to create value in our regions of operation and benefit the residents of the regions where our assets are located, Polyus regularly sponsors local social and cultural events.

  • Polyus holds the annual “Polyus. Golden Season” theatre competition, which aims to bring social and cultural activities to Siberia and Russia’s Far East. Polyus has been conducting the competition for four years now. Our company is also a partner of the international modern art festival Territoriya. Polyus has for three years been organizing theatre festivals in its regions of presence in a partnership with Territoriya and the Moscow Museum of Modern Art. In 2019, 39 theatre events and exhibitions as well as 14 educational events were held as part of the “Territoriya.Magadan” festival for the local population and for theatre companies from Magadan and Irkutsk Regions, the Krasnoyarsk Territory and the Republic of Sakha.
  • Since 2018, Polyus has collaborated with the Moscow Kremlin Museums supporting, amongst other initiatives, the transportation of a Faberge Easter egg to the Arseniev State Museum in Vladivostok.
