Operating results

In the first half of 2013, the Company produced 718 thousand ounces of refined gold from continuing operations, a 7% increase compared to 670 thousand ounces a year ago. The growth in production was achieved as a result of exceptional performance at Blagodatnoye (+12% year-on-year) and Titimukhta (+38% year-on-year) and continuing ramp up of Verninskoye (+80% year-on-year). In the second quarter of 2013, the Company produced 398 thousand ounces of refined gold, an 8% increase to 367 thousand ounces in the second quarter of 2012.

Polyus Gold moved 32.8 million cubic meters of rock in total during the first half of 2013, which is 1% more than a year ago. This was due to increased mining works at Verninskoe and Kuranakh, in line with the respective mine plans. In the second quarter of 2013 the Company’s mines moved 16.0 million cubic meters of rock in total, compared to 16.4 million cubic meters a year ago.

A total of 14.3 million tonnes of ore was mined in the first half of 2013, an increase of 11% compared to the first half of 2012 (12.9 million tonnes). The increase was mainly due to changes in the Olimpiada mine plan in the second quarter of 2013 aimed at optimisation of equipment utilisation. In the second quarter of 2013, a total of 7.9 million tonnes of ore were mined, a 28% increase compared to 6.2 million tonnes in the second quarter of 2012.

The average stripping ratio for the Company in the first half of 2013 decreased by 10% year-on-year to 1.9 m³/t (first half of 2012: 2.1 m³/t) due to a lower stripping ratio at Olimpiada because of higher ore production volumes. In the second quarter of 2013, the average stripping ratio for the Company was 1.6 compared to 2.3 in the second quarter of 2012.

In the first half of 2013, the Company processed 10.9 million tonnes of ore, which is 5% more than a year ago. This was due to increased processing at Blagodatnoye, Titimukhta and Verninskoye. In the second quarter of 2013, the Company’s mines processed 5.6 million tonnes of ore compared to 5.1 million tonnes in the second quarter of 2012.

Operating results by mine

Olimpiada

In the first half of 2013, Olimpiada produced 308 thousand ounces of refined gold, compared to 318 thousand ounces a year ago, as a result of lower volumes of ore processing (3.8 million tonnes in the first half of 2013 compared to 4.0 million tonnes a year ago). The lower processing volumes were due to planned and unscheduled maintenance at both Olimpiada plants which, additionally, resulted in lower recovery rates (74.0% in the first half of 2013 compared to 75.6% a year ago).

In the second quarter of 2013, Olimpiada produced 152 thousand ounces of gold compared to 162 thousand ounces in the second quarter of 2012.

Automation of both Olimpiada plants is in progress. As part of the installation of a closed water cycle, construction of a cooling tower is approaching completion, which will facilitate stabilisation of temperatures at the bio-oxidation facility.

Blagodatnoye

Blagodatnoye produced 195 thousand ounces of gold in the first half of 2013 (first half of 2012: 174 thousand ounces). The 12% increase in production was mainly due to higher than planned processing volumes and ongoing optimisation of the automated process control system at the plant.

In the second quarter of 2013, the mine produced 108 thousand ounces of gold compared to 90 thousand ounces in the second quarter of 2012.

The feasibility study for the expansion of the mill throughput to 8 million tonnes of ore per year from 6 million tonnes has been submitted for the regulatory review which is expected to be completed in autumn 2013. The Board is expected to review the expansion following the receipt of regulatory approvals and, more importantly, the commencement of construction of the Razdolinsk-Taiga grid by the Federal Grid Company.

Verninskoye

As the ramp up of the mine continues, Verninskoye produced 32 thousand ounces of gold in the first half of 2013, compared to 18 thousand ounces a year ago. The increase was due to higher processing volumes compared to the first half of 2012 whilst operating on a partial flow sheet.

In the second quarter of 2013, the mine produced 21 thousand ounces of gold, compared to 11 thousand ounces in the second quarter of 2012.

The mobile primary crusher and the larger flotation concentrate pumps were delivered onsite in late June and are expected to be commissioned by August. This will facilitate the increase in both plant throughput and flotation concentrate mass pull, allowing the ramp up to design parameters. The option to install a more robust fixed primary crusher is currently being reviewed.

The design of the Peleduy-Mamakan grid has been completed and submitted for the regulatory review. The construction of the grid is aimed at bringing cheaper and more reliable grid power to Verninskoye. Tender procedures for the selection of the construction contractor will commence following the receipt of regulatory approvals.

Kuranakh

Kuranakh produced 69 thousand ounces of gold in the first half of 2013 compared to 70 thousand ounces a year ago. The slight decrease in gold output was due to lower recovery rates as a result of increased zinc content in ore fed to the plant. The issue has been successfully resolved and recovery rates have been above target since May 2013.

In the second quarter of 2013, the mine produced 37 thousand ounces of gold, a 1% increase over the second quarter of 2012.

Feasibility study for the expansion of the mine throughput, including the separation of ore into clay and coarse fractions, has been reviewed. It has been concluded that the project is unviable due to high capital requirements which cannot be justified by a corresponding decrease in operating cost. Going forward, the Company intends to take measures to balance production at Kuranakh against the mine’s cost profile.

Development projects

Natalka

With significant progress made in the project development, Natalka remains on schedule for the commissioning of the full flowsheet in the summer 2014. The Company is considering an option to start production at Natalka in winter 2013/2014 using a partial flowsheet and the already installed pilot plant.

To date, earthworks totalling 7.0 million cubic meters, including 2.3 million cubic meters in the first half of 2013, have been completed across 18 sites including the mill, central repair workshop, solid waste landfill, car depot, fuel storage facility, logistics base, boilers 1 and 2, and power substations 2 and 3. Remaining earthworks are in progress on various roads.

Mining works commenced in February 2013, initially at low grade ore horizons before moving on to higher grade horizons. In the first half of 2013, 1.4 million tonnes of ore were mined for stock-piling, including 241 thousand tonnes at 2.0 g/t, 637 thousand tonnes at 1.0 g/t and 549 thousand tonnes of ore at 0.6 g/t. In the second quarter of 2013, 562 thousand tonnes of ore were mined, including 213 thousand tonnes of 2.0 g/t ore. It is expected that the increased proportion of high-grade ore to the total mined ore volumes seen in the second quarter of 2013 will be maintained in the second half of 2013.

Construction of the mill main building is well underway with the installation of metal frames and wall panels in progress. The installation of bored piles has been completed at desorption section and gold cash room sites, and is approaching completion at the cyanidation, thickening and filtration section sites.

Construction of the permanent camp started in May, with construction of foundations and installation of the bored piles currently in progress. The commissioning of the camp is expected in late autumn.

The SAG mill and ball mill, along with all ancillary equipment, have been delivered onsite. Shipment of drilling rigs, trucks and mix-pump trucks, as well as the equipment for the reagent preparation, desorption, carbon recovery and cyanidation sections, is in progress. This includes 8 flotation machines, 4 belt conveyors of various types, 2 thickeners and 3 electrolyzers.

Construction of 6 dormitories at the temporary construction camp has been completed. Construction staff headcount onsite reached 2,500 personnel.

Key short term priorities include the construction of a temporary tailings dam by October, installation and testing of the mill equipment in autumn, and the hiring of an international operations team by late autumn.
